Plans for the new, state-of-the-art leisure facility for Thornaby Town Centre have been given the go-ahead thanks to the £23.9million we secured from the last Conservative Government.
The new centre will include a five-lane swimming pool, gym, sauna and changing facilities, were approved at a Planning Committee on Wednesday 4th December. The two-storey building will sit on the former Phoenix House site and will connect into the existing Thornaby Pavilion with a link bridge.
A new entrance and car park, providing around 50 additional spaces, will also be created as well as improvements to the surrounding public realm. Enhancements will also be made to the internal layout and fitness spaces in the existing pavilion.
Matt Vickers MP said: "When we first secured the Town Deal funding from Government, I put out a survey to residents to see what they wanted, and a huge number of people said they wanted an updated swimming pool and leisure centre for Thornaby. And now thanks to funding from the last Conservative Government that is exactly what they are getting. As well as providing improved facilities for local people the pool will drive footfall into the town centre to support local businesses. And now with a deal done to sort the Golden Eagle these are really exciting times for Thornaby”.
