On Friday 16 June, Matt Vickers MP met with Chair of Yarm Town Council, Peter Monck who filled him in on the exciting progress which has been made to Yarm Town Hall.
The Town Hall is under renovation as part of the £20 million funding awarded to Eaglescliffe and Yarm in the Levelling Up programme.
The lower level of the historic building is set to become a visitors centre, with a new glass front, whilst the roof and upper level is restored to its former appearance and will host an educational hub.
The education hub will welcome school children, to educate them on Yarm’s heritage. There will be artefacts and interactive elements.
The building work started in January 2023, and is predicted to finish in the middle of July of the same year.
After the visit, Matt Vickers MP said: “I’m incredibly impressed to see plans coming to life so quickly. The Town Council have held this ambition for years and I'm glad the levelling up funding is helping to get it across the line.
“This incredible historic building had been needing some love for a while, and it will be a proud moment to see the hall reclaim its position at the heart of the high street.
“But the improvements are not only external. The plans to host an educational centre for young students with a heritage centre to celebrate our past will cross Yarm’s past with it’s future, allowing the next generation to learn about their heritage and be proud of their roots.”
There will be a public unveiling once the scaffolding is removed, announced at a later date.
The £20 million levelling up funding is also being put towards Yarm’s public toilet renovation, restoring the Aviary at Preston Park, creating a tribute to our railway heritage and new cycle paths.
