Matt Vickers visited a new local community group, opening today (Tuesday 14 March), with the intention of supporting those suffering from Fibromyalgia and mental health issues.
Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder which can cause pain and tenderness throughout the body and symptoms of extreme fatigue. Those living with this condition can also show a higher risk of developing depression and anxiety.
The group will provide one to one support for Fibromyalgia sufferers, which will help assess the link between this condition and mental health issues.
As there is currently no cure for Fibromyalgia, those living with the disorder resort to treatments and support which relive some of the symptoms.
After the visit, Matt Vickers MP said: “To bring a community project which supports those with disabilities and illnesses to fruition takes dedication and hard work.
“These incredible individuals have excelled in their mammoth task.
“I found one of the team members, Stephen’s story, particularly inspiring. Previously a local Councillor for Hartlepool, he was forced to step down because of the condition.
“He now leads groups as a volunteer, supporting people through the challenges posed by the condition.”
The group has been created by the Community Interest Company (CIC), FibroConnect TS. First established in Hartlepool, by a group of people who suffer from the condition, this is the first branch in Stockton.
The space, in Parkfield Community Centre, will also provide support to the wider community. There will be social spaces, a community shop selling second hand clothing and a community fridge for those in need of fresh food.
The team wish to emphasise that anyone is welcome to visit. You can find the group on Tuesday and Friday afternoons at Parkfield Community Centre Stockton, and they are contactable by phone on 07361894930.
