The upgrades will be likely to improve the station's current infrastructure with a detailed plan to follow.
Matt Vickers MP has praised the government's latest move to award £10m to Thornaby, which is likely to be spent improving and expanding existing infrastructure.
The multi-million pound development has been made possible through the axing of HS2, with funding repurposed to local transport projects.
The news follows Matt Vickers' successful campaign to keep Thornaby Station's ticket office open amid nation-wide office closures, and the first direct trains from the Teesside station to London.
Matt Vickers MP said:
"What fantastic news that Thornaby station is set to receive a £10m upgrade!
We’ve already seen the introduction of the first direct trains from Thornaby to London and protected the ticket office, and now we can make the station fit for the future.
This is only possible because the government cancelled the last leg of HS2. A golden age for local train stations with unprecedented investment in Eaglescliffe, Darlington and Middlesbrough."
