On the week which marked Back British Farmers Day, Matt Vickers MP travelled to Little Stainton, where he met with farm owners Clare and Stewart.
Matt Vickers joined Clare Wise, who farms sheep and cattle, and husband Stewart, who oversees the arable side of the business in Little Stainton.
The Stockton South MP accepted an invite from the couple to better understand the difficulties which are facing farmers on the ground, and how he can support local farmers through future policy passed in Westminster.
Clare taught Matt about factors which contribute to running an efficient farming business amid policy changes post-Brexit, including grass lays, feeding schemes and the latest aggrotech.
Matt also marked Back British Farmers Day in Westminster, attending breakfast with representatives from the National Farmers Union, a group representing 55,000 members involved in farming and growing across England and Wales.
Matt Vickers MP said:
“I want our British farmers to thrive.
“The British option in our supermarkets is always the best quality, the freshest, and the most nutritious option, so I want to ensure that not only does the British customer recognise that, but our farmers receive fair recognition and security.
“British farmers were the backbone maintaining our supply chain during the pandemic. And the vision is, as we go on, they’ll become our supermarkets leading suppliers.
“We’re listening to farmers, who are collaborating with DEFRA and the Government to create schemes such as the agricultural subsidy regime, which will allow farmers to farm in new ways.
“I’m committed to lobbying in Parliament for fair policy for our farmers, and so visits like this are really useful to understand where our farmers are, and the direction they're headed in.”
