Matt Vickers urges residents to donate items to the Last Post Memorial Bar in Thornaby in aid of the humanitarian effort in Ukraine. Julie Cooper, owner of the Last Post Memorial Bar, is working together with veteran groups to fill 3 vans worth of donations and drive them to the Polish-Ukrainian border in aid of the humanitarian effort.
Julie and Matt are appealing for more items that will help children and babies to be donated to the Last Post Memorial Bar, Cranworth Street, Thornaby.
Julie, the owner of the bar, has already received a van’s worth of donations, however hopes to fill 3 vans with items to drive to the Polish-Ukrainian border in aid of the humanitarian effort currently underway there.
The collection is currently underway and will go on until Friday when she will be packing the items and loading them into the vans for transport.
Over a million people have already fled Ukraine following Russia’s invasion of the country. The vast majority of refugees (estimated 1,027,603 - BBC News) have fled to Poland.
Matt said:
“I have been contacted by many people asking how they can do their bit to help the humanitarian effort following the horrific war unfolding in Ukraine.
“Julie at The Last Post has put together an amazing project, bringing together veterans and aiming to collect a massive 3 vans worth of stuff to drive to the Ukraine-Poland border.
“We know that the most generous people in the world live on Teesside and the donations Julie has received so far has proven that – but she still needs more!
“If you can spare anything for the cause – particularly items for children and babies – get yourself down to the Last Post Bar in Thornaby between now and Friday.”
Julie said:
“We're collecting at the moment to take things over to the Polish-Ukraine border. The response has been absolutely massive, but we’re still missing a lot of things.
“We started with 1 van, we've now got 2 vans and we may have 3 vans because some of the bikers have come on board as well.
“I would like to put a call out for baby milk, nappies, baby bum creams, wipes, jars of baby food - things like that. Anything to do with helping the children.”
